Dr Peta Maguire

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

Peta is a clinical psychologist at Bloom Health Clinic who primarily works with children and adolescents. She is a warm and dedicated psychologist with over 7 years’ experience in government and non-government organisations working with a diverse range of presentations. Peta’s therapeutic approach is primarily Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), however Peta draws on evidence-based techniques most suited to the person and the presenting concerns. Peta has a particular interest in working with children and young people with anxiety-based conditions to change their relationship with their thoughts and feelings and enjoys using family and systemic approaches to improve family functioning.

A Message from Peta

I have always been interested in other people’s thoughts, feelings and motivations. I am intrigued by relationship dynamics, including social relationships, romantic relationships and family relationships, and the role of each person in these. Throughout my academic history and career I have been drawn to working with young people and their families/ care teams, to strengthen relationships and understanding of the person. I am passionate about working collegially with the young person and their support network to impart change and work towards the young person’s therapeutic goals.

Working from an evidence-based framework my therapeutic approach predominantly lays within cognitive behavioural therapy. My approach is strengths based, goal driven, and person centred. Generally, I tend to take a structured and targeted approach, with collaboratively created treatment goals and timeframes.

I frequently use screeners and psychometric assessments to enhance my understanding of the person I am working with and to develop a more in-depth formulation of what is happening across contexts. I am an avid researcher and enjoy learning about different theories and frameworks which enhances my understanding of the people I work with.

While experienced in a range of presentations, I am particularly interested in anxiety, low mood and depression, family functioning, perfectionism, life transition periods, emotional regulation, self-esteem and identity formation (i.e. adolescence, gender and sexual identity) and navigating friendship and social difficulties.

I provide a warm therapeutic style which assists young people to feel heard and supported for positive change. I also enjoy working closely with parents/carers and families to provide parenting and family support to foster healthy parent-child attachment and improve family communication. Given this, as well as individual therapy, I have experience facilitating family sessions as well as facilitating group programs related to anxiety management, building social skills, and building positive coping strategies. I believe young people and their families are the experts and am guided by what works for the young person and their family.

Outside of the Bloom therapy rooms, I continue to work in the public setting. Outside of work, I enjoy reading, cooking, and being outside on our family farm. I am happiest when I am surrounded by animals, including my puppy, horses, cows and sheep!

It is a privilege to be invited into the lives of others, and I am truly thankful for the trust and honesty clients have when they attend therapy. I acknowledge how difficult it can be talking openly about your experiences and am grateful to be offered the opportunity to work with each of my clients.

If you would like to connect and work together, I would be honoured to work towards your goals collaboratively.
